Moosonee Ferry Niska 1 Salvage
Pierre Gagné Contracting Ltd successfully completed a challenging vessel salvaging in Moosonee, ON, showcasing our team’s ability to work efficiently in remote and demanding conditions. The vessel got stranded during regular landing operations at the end of the sailing season on Moose River. Ice was building on the stern, and it was only a matter of time until it would be completely encased in ice. The crew worked on a tight schedule to salvage the vessel before ice came.
The salvage began with detailed site prep and a machine arrangement plan to guide the move. Crews cleared debris and sharp edges from the vessel and leveled aggregate beneath it to create a stable surface.
With the site now ready, the vessel was blocked at the first cradle point, then the cradle was removed. Dozers and excavators were positioned, cables secured, and inflatable airbags placed under the hull. Once inflated, the airbags lifted the vessel, allowing it to be carefully moved into position.
The vessel was guided up a loading ramp to its new location, then secured in place. After deflating and removing the airbags, all equipment was dismantled and demobilized.
This successful relocation demonstrated our crew’s technical expertise, skilled planning, and effective use of specialized equipment.
